The department was established in 1993. It maintains well-established relations with Teacher Competence Centre and Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (CQAHE) under the Ministry of Education and Science: teachers of the Department participate in expert activities, preparation of education documents of national importance; they are the first ones who know and implement numerous education innovations in practice. The Department is in constant contact with members of Lithuanian Choreographer Association, Lithuanian Folk Culture Centre, Department of Choreography, University of Klaipėda and the Department of Choreography. Since 2006, the Department of Arts Education has cooperated with the Lithuanian Dance Information Centre, Press of Arts and Contemporary Dance Association.
The Department of Arts Education and teachers of Dance Education maintain relations with the Fund of Lithuanians in Canada, Lithuanian communities of Canada and the USA. The connections are made with University of Flensburg (Germany), BaltArt- fine art and arts education specialist group from Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which analyses relevant questions and social application problems of arts education. The department also cooperates with the University of Flensburg (Germany), University of Bergen (Norway), University of Helsinki (Finland), Konservatorium Wien University (Austria), Daugavpils University (Latvia), Riga Teacher Training and Educational Management Academy (Latvia) others. There are currently 163 undergraduate, 65 master and 3 doctorate students studying in the department.

Dance Education. Full-time (4 years) and part-time (5.5 years) studies, 240 credits. Programme is accredited until June 30, 2017.
Theatre Education. Full-time (4 years) and part-time (5.5 years) studies, 240 credits. Programme is accredited until June 30, 2017.
Music Education (Specialisations: Music Education, Special Music Education). Full-time (2 years) and part-time (3 years) studies, 120 credits. Programme is accredited until December 31, 2014.
Fine Arts Education (Specialisations: Fine Arts Education, Fine Arts History Education). Full-time (2 years) and part-time (3 years) studies, 120 credits. Programme is accredited until June 30, 2014.
Dance Education. Full-time (2 years) and part-time (3 years) studies, 120 credits. Programme is accredited until January 14, 2013.
