Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences (Faculty of Lithuanian philology) has been organising Erasmus Intensive Language courses (EILC) for more than 6 years.

The main aim of the beginner course for EILC students is to provide students with the knowledge of the Lithuanian language required for levels A1 and A2 according to the common European framework of reference for languages as well as help students understand and adapt to the living conditions in Lithuania (traditions, customs, shopping, transport, etc.) Also, to present the social and economical context of Lithuania and the Baltic region.

Objectives: to familiarize students with the Lithuanian language as one of the oldest indo-European languages, to develop students’ communicative competence (survival Lithuanian); to encourage students to use Lithuanian in common everyday situations; to introduce students to the peculiarities of the Lithuanian alphabet and teach them to read as well as produce a simple written text; to develop the four  communicative skills i.e. reading, listening, speaking and writing and help them master Lithuanian pronunciation. The language competence will enable them to live and study in Lithuania.

The programme: basic structures of the Lithuanian grammar, grammatical categories of gender, number, case; notions, system and use of a verb, noun, adjective, adverb, numeral, preposition; basic declarative, interrogative and exclamatory sentence structures; word building; principles of pronunciation; basic vocabulary and language use on topics of personal identity, city, region, family, relationship with other people, work, leisure time, home, food,, weather, entertainment, health.

Practical tasks: speaking skills (identifying, introduction, communicative formulas, etc.); reading skills (labels, questionnaires, advertisements, dialogues, stories); listening skills (global and focused listening: dialogues, monologues, songs, weather forecast), writing skills (postcards, short messages, e-mails); introducing and consolidating active and passive  vocabulary (word lists, schemas, pictures).

Methodology: communicative and cooperative language teaching approach based on functionality; great variety of interactive and critical thinking activities. Students learn a language through using it to communicate in authentic and meaningful situations. Learner needs and preferred learning styles are taken into consideration as well as specifics of a multinational and multicultural class.

Teaching methods: explanation, demonstration, presentation, simulation, flashcards, directed practice, educational games; individual/pair/group work.
